{"id":268,"date":"2015-09-08T21:57:36","date_gmt":"2015-09-09T04:57:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.asideofsunsets.com\/?p=268"},"modified":"2015-09-08T21:57:36","modified_gmt":"2015-09-09T04:57:36","slug":"antigua-on-election-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/index.php\/2015\/09\/08\/antigua-on-election-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Antigua on Election Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>4 Days in Guatemala &#8211; Part 2<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asideofsunsets.com\/finding-our-zen-at-lake-atitlan\/\">Part 1<\/a> of this story, you know we spent our first couple of days in Guatemala relaxing in Lake Atitlan. \u00a0On the afternoon of Day 3 of our 4-day adventure we arrived in Antigua.\u00a0 Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes about an hour away from Guatemala City.\u00a0 It had been the colonial capital for 200 years\u00a0before Guatemala City took the title.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Where to Stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesanrafaelhotel.com\/\">San Rafael Hotel<\/a> \u2013 I felt like we splurged here (in terms of Guatemalan prices) but the hotel was perfect.\u00a0 It was a small, beautiful boutique hotel a stone\u2019s throw from the main road and the famous Santa Catalina Arch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-276\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4059-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4059\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4059-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4059-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4059-696x928.jpg 696w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4059-1068x1424.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4059-315x420.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What To Do &amp; Where To Eat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We spent the afternoon wandering the cobblestone streets and popping in and out of shops until we came upon a sign that read <em>\u201cOn Saturday 5th, Sunday 6th, and Monday 7th the sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited due to elections.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> I was in disbelief.\u00a0 Here we were halfway through our vacation and we wouldn\u2019t be able to even enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> check and see if the country you\u2019re traveling to is having an election and if that might affect your trip in any way.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, that didn\u2019t stop us from enjoying an amazing meal. A good friend suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hbistro\">Hector\u2019s<\/a> and it was incredible. If you find yourself in Antigua make sure you stop by there for dinner one night!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-273\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-273 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4034-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pacaya Volcano\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4034-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4034-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4034-696x928.jpg 696w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4034-1068x1424.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4034-315x420.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pacaya Volcano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On a positive note, the lack of alcohol made it easy to go to bed early and wake up at sunrise to hike Pacaya Volcano.\u00a0 We went back and forth about the hike knowing that we wouldn\u2019t be witnessing red flowing lava but then decided it would be worth the trip.<\/p>\n<p>It was a pretty good hike (you can ride a donkey up if you\u2019d prefer) full of shade, but also plenty of time to stop and take in the gorgeous views. When we got near the top of the volcano you could start to feel the heat under the volcanic rock and we were able to toast marshmallows! Touristy, I know, but who doesn\u2019t want a sugary reward after hiking up a volcano?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_272\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-272\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-272 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4027-e1463633147638-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Marshmallows on Pacaya Volcano\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4027-e1463633147638-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4027-e1463633147638-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4027-e1463633147638-696x928.jpg 696w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4027-e1463633147638-1068x1424.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/dev.asideofsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_4027-e1463633147638-315x420.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marshmallows on Pacaya Volcano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the hike, we had the afternoon to go visit the museum in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casasantodomingo.com.gt\/default-en.html\">Casa Santo Domingo<\/a>.\u00a0 We wandered through courtyards, underground crypts, and throughout the property until the rain started coming down and it was time for lunch.\u00a0 The entire property is made of wood and stone and is relatively dark \u2013 the restaurant was no different except that parts of it were open to the\u00a0outside.\u00a0 We had a delicious (albeit expensive lunch) while torrential rain went on outside (and inside) the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as the rain subsided\u00a0we decided to trek up to Cerro de la Cruz &#8211; the large cross on top of a hill overlooking the city.
